What is a certified arborist and why should I care?

An ISA Certified Arborist an individual who has achieved a level of knowledge in the art and science of tree care through experience and by passing a comprehensive examination developed by some of the nation’s leading experts on tree care. Certified Arborists must also continue their education to maintain their certification and adhere to a Code of Ethics. Therefore, they are more likely to be up to date on the latest techniques in arboriculture.

What does ISA stand for?

ISA stands for International Society of Arboriculture.

What is crown thinning?

Crown thinning is the selective removal of stems and branches to increase light penetration and air movement throughout the crown of a tree. The intent is to improve a tree's structure and form.

What is crown cleaning?

Crown cleaning focuses on the removal of dead and dying branches.

What is crown raising?

Crown raising is the selective removal of lower branches.

What is crown reduction?

Crown reduction is the selective removal of some larger upper branches to lower a tree’s height.

What is selective pruning?

TCIA’s Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) program is the only safety credentialing program in the industry and is designed to address several of the safety challenges that tree care companies face.
The ideal CTSP shares attributes of a coach, including:

  • Model behavior that leads to a safer work environment

By definition, plant health care is the proactive approach to maintaining tree, shrub and groundcover health through holistic cultural management and integrated treatments. ​

What is TRAQ Certified?

ISA offers the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) as an instructor-led credential that demonstrates professional knowledge in tree risk assessment through participation in a training course and passing its accompanying exam. The TRAQ program offers tree care professionals the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the fundamentals of tree risk assessment by learning a standardized, systematic process for assessing tree risk and providing information to tree owners and risk managers for making informed decisions that will promote the safety of people and property and enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity. Through education and training, arborists will learn strategies to systematically identify and assess tree risk.
The qualified professional will:
  • be proficient with the fundamentals of limited-visual and basic tree risk assessment, as defined in ISA’s Best Management Practices: Tree Risk Assessment;
  • understand the principles of advanced diagnostic techniques for assessing tree risk;
  • gather and synthesize information needed to assess tree risk; and
  • make reasoned judgments and recommendations for mitigating identified risk.
